About the Journal

Asian and African Studies is a premier international scholarly journal published since 1965 by the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. The journal is dedicated to the multidisciplinary study of the languages, literatures, cultures, and histories of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Its geographical and cultural scope is extensive, encompassing the Middle East, the Arab and Persianate Worlds, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, Ancient Egypt, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania.

Scholarly Scope and Content

The journal publishes original, previously unpublished research primarily within the fields of history, linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. It also welcomes outstanding contributions from the social and political sciences, religious studies, art, and philosophy, as well as interdisciplinary and comparative works. Please note that the journal does not publish technical or educational materials, nor does it accept contributions in the fields of economics or medicine. In addition to standard research papers, AAS publishes review articles and critical assessments of relevant publications.

Editorial Process and Peer Review

AAS adheres to a rigorous double-blind peer-review process to ensure the highest academic integrity. Each submission undergoes an initial editor screening followed by blind reviews conducted by an editorial board member and two independent external experts. While the primary language of publication is English, the journal occasionally includes articles in French and German, provided they are accompanied by an English abstract. The journal is published biannually, with releases in May and November.
