Author Guidelines

Geografický časopis publishes original and topical scientific articles that advance knowledge in all fields of geography or bring significant contributions from the related disciplines. Recommended extent of the article is 12-20 standard pages, including references, text and graphic appendixes, and notes. Articles exceeding this standard are subject to the approval of the editorial board. Every article must be accompanied by an abstract (not more than 15 lines) and a shortened version of the article (summary) not exceeding two standard pages in English. Manuscripts will be submitted in electronic form to the e-mail address: geograficky.casopis@savba.sk.

The Editorial Board expects that the authors stick to the following arrangement of the manuscript:

3. the principal text
4. appendixes to the main text
5. acknowledgement (if appropriate)
6. literature list
7. summary
8. tables
9. notes
10. texts accompanying figures
11. figures

The title page will be on a separate sheet containing the name of the author/s, academic titles, precise address of his working, position, telephone, facsimile and e-mail contacts.

A statement signed by all authors that the article has not been published or submitted to publication in other journals or miscellanies, and if admitted in Geografický časopis, it would not be published elsewhere without previous approval of the editorial board, will be enclosed.

The main text starts with the title of the article; the author's name is not quoted in the headline. The title should be brief and accurate. The structure of the text will depend on the nature of the contribution. Empiric studies should observe the following scheme: introduction, formulation (or situation) of the proposed subject, chosen method, used materials, reached results, discussion and evaluation, and conclusion. Own results should be clearly distinguished from those of other authors in the text.

The text will be delivered in electronic form (MS Word and OpenOffice Writer formats), written in Times New Roman font, size 12, line spacing 2. The pages will be numbered.

Appendixes

The figures and tables with the corresponding marking (fig. or table) and number will be provided in the text and separate files. All graphic appendixes (figures, maps, and photographs) will be marked with the common abbreviation "fig." and a number. They will be submitted as separate sheets, in black-and-white and appropriate resolution. Titles of figures and accompanying texts will be presented in the main text with the corresponding markings.

Colour figures are possible in the electronic version. Colour figures in the printed version are possible based on the official order (please get in touch with the Editorial Office). The price for colour printing depends on the extent of the colour appendices (50 € - 400 €).

Tables will be precise, space-saving and numbered. Each will be presented in a separate file (MS Excel and OpenOffice Calc formats – this also applies to graphs generated in those applications). Headlines will contain the abbreviation Tab., a number and a title. Explanations and sources will be quoted immediately below the table for that case. The size and inner arrangement of the table will allow its location in a horizontal or vertical position on a single page. Larger tables are not admitted.

Abstract and summary

The abstract should express the main topic of the article. It will be brief without repetition of the contents of the title of the article. Keywords will be quoted at the foot of the abstract. The summary will be compact, containing the aim, methods and main results of the article. It will not contain statements and knowledge not included in the prime text.

Referencing

Geografický časopis uses the Harvard System of Referencing, which contains the name/s of the author/s, the year of publishing of the quoted title, for instance: Smith (1996) or (Smith 1996). In case of references to books or extensive studies, and above all in case of literal citations, it is also necessary to quote page/s of the cited work, for instance: Smith (1996, p. 42) or Smith (1996, pp. 21-28). Suppose the article contains a reference to two or more works written by the same author published in the same year. In that case, a letter will be added to the year, for instance: Smith (1996a) and Smith (1996b), citation of work written by two authors will contain both names (for instance Bradshaw and Stenning 2004), whereas citation of work written by more than two authors will contain only the name of the first author followed by "et al." (for instance, Mazúr et al. 1982).
