Abstract

Kindergartens are a key component of preschool facilities and lay the foundation of the educational system of a developed society. The development of kindergartens in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War was influenced by various political and economic factors, which were reflected in the differences between the regions in the Czech and Slovak Republics. The study analyses these trends based on a comparative analysis of temporal and spatial data from the period 1945–1989 and focuses on general indicators. We analysed the development of kindergartens based on four main stages, during which the development of kindergartens had a specific character. The dynamics of this development also reflect economic and ideological changes in society. Research on historical trends in the development and spatial distribution of kindergartens provides policymakers with valuable insights for identifying gaps, strategic planning, efficient resource allocation, and creating inclusive policies that take into account past trends and future needs of early childhood education.
