Vol. 8 No. 1 (2024): HPC Focus 2024
AI is becoming a core force in high-performance computing (HPC), reshaping how scientists and engineers tackle complex problems at massive scale. By combining machine learning with traditional simulation-based workloads, AI accelerates discovery in fields like climate modeling, drug design, astrophysics, and materials science—often reducing computations that once took weeks down to hours or minutes. Modern supercomputers are increasingly built around AI-optimized hardware such as GPUs and specialized accelerators, enabling hybrid workflows where simulations generate data and AI models rapidly analyze, optimize, or even replace parts of the computation. In this way, AI doesn’t just run on HPC systems—it fundamentally changes how HPC is used, shifting it from pure number-crunching toward smarter, more adaptive computing.
