Publication ethics statement of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics

The publishers of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics are the Institute of Economic Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences as the main publisher and the Institute for Forecasting—Centre of Social and Psychological Sciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences acting as a co-publisher. The journal is managed by the editorial office (editor-in-chief and executive editor) who, together with the editorial board of the journal, oversee compliance with the rules of publishing ethics. The publishers of the journal guarantee the editorial office and the editorial board‘s independence in their decision-making. The ethical standards we require are in line with international ethical guidelines.

Rights and duties of authors

1. The author is obliged to become acquainted with the publishing ethics and instructions for the authors of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics.

2. The author should present their results honestly and without fabrication, falsification or inappropriate data manipulation; fraudulent or intentionally inaccurate conclusions are considered unethical.

3. Manuscripts under review by another journal may not be submitted to Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics for consideration and vice versa.

4. The author is obliged to state their professional affiliation (workplace, address, e-mail contact). The author is obliged to avoid offensive statements that could cause any harm to other people or impugn the reputation of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics.

5. The author shall declare that the manuscript was written following the standards of scientific work while adhering to the citation standards and guidelines of the Ekonomicky casopis/Journal of Economics.

6. The author is responsible for the content of their work. The deliberate presentation of inaccurate information is unacceptable. Plagiarism is inadmissible.

7. The author must honestly acknowledge the contributions of all involved in the research or manuscript preparation and refrain from giving credit to those not involved in the research and manuscript preparation. The author responsible for the text is obliged to ensure the consent of any co-authors of the work.

Rights and duties of publishers, editorial board and editorial office

1. The main publisher and co-publisher shall guarantee the independence of the editorial office and the editorial board in their decisions and shall protect them from possible commercial, political or institutional interference and pressure.

2. The editorial office and editorial board of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics undertake to act towards all interested parties in the publication process following the journal’s publication ethics and good moral standing while avoiding any racial, gender, sexual, religious, ethnic or political discrimination.

3. The editorial office and the editorial board of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics will ensure that any potential conflicts of interest between the editorial board, authors, reviewers and members of the editorial board are prevented.

4. The editorial office and members of the editorial board of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics may not abuse their position in their own favour or in favour of or against other authors.

5. The editorial office is responsible for observing the principles of publication ethics, protecting the confidentiality of personal data, the content of reviews, and the confidentiality of the editors‘ communications with authors, reviewers, and members of the editorial board of Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics.

6. The editorial office will follow procedures that guarantee the quality of the journal‘s content and are responsible for ensuring that their decisions are not influenced in any way by commercial, personal or institutional interests. It ensures that the evaluation of the manuscript is unbiased, impartial and based only on its professional content.

7. The editorial office undertakes to ensure an objective evaluation of the manuscript, solely based on its academic qualities. Members of the editorial board evaluate manuscripts and make decisions based on academic criteria only.

8. Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor’s professional research. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.

9. The editorial office will publish the names and workplaces of the members of the editorial board.

10. The main publisher shall be able to demonstrate transparently how the journal is financed and fulfil all contractual obligations entered into in connection with the preparation, publication and distribution of the journal. The editorial office will keep a long-term archive of the final published version of all issues of the journal.

Rights and duties of peer reviewers

1. Peer reviewers are selected based on their recognised academic expertise.

2. The reviewer is obliged to become acquainted with the publishing ethics of the Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics, the form of the peer review and the way of preparation.

3. The peer reviewer will prepare a review report without recompense.

4. The manuscripts must be treated as confidential documents. Information or ideas obtained through the evaluation of the manuscript are considered confidential and shall not be used for the benefit of the peer reviewer.

5. The peer reviewer undertakes to evaluate the manuscript objectively, impartially and responsibly in terms of quality of scholarship according to their knowledge and conscience.

6. The peer reviewer writes the report in a matter-of-fact style that in no way challenges the authors’ dignity

7. The peer reviewer may decline to review the paper if they do not feel sufficiently qualified, do not have enough time to review the manuscript, are biased or if there is a conflict of interest, in which case they should inform the editor of the facts promptly.

8. The peer reviewer should inform the editors immediately if, in the case of a peer-reviewed manuscript of the proposed article, they identify any form of plagiarism. The reviewer is obliged to notify the editors if they are aware that a similar paper has already been published.

9. The peer-reviewing process is anonymous. The reviewer must keep all information regarding the review process confidential from third parties.

Procedure for dealing with cases of unethical behaviour

1. Any violation or suspected violation of publishing ethics or unethical behaviour must be reported to the editorial office of Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics.

2. The editorial office is also entitled to suspend or stop the editorial process in the case of a manuscript that is suspected of plagiarism or other unethical conduct.

3. The editorial board is obliged to make every effort to investigate the case fairly and impartially.

4. The result of the investigation may be the information and instruction given to the person concerned, a written warning or the withdrawal of the text. Ekonomický časopis/Journal of Economics may terminate any form of cooperation with the person concerned.

5. The editorial office will be willing to publish corrections, errata, clarifications and apologies if necessary.
